Cool Tips
This is a series of electronic leaflets on how to save energy in the home and elsewhere. Excess carbon dioxide gas creates the danger of global warming and abnormal climate. This gas is created when we use gas, oil or electricity in and around our homes, when we travel by car or by air, or when we shop and do not buy locally. We could change our lifestyles by cutting down on energy use, by supporting local shops and produce, and by persuading friends and neighbours to do the same.

Thinking Points
This is a series of electronic leaflets that discuss the lifestyle challenges that we face. We all produce carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, that contributes to global warming, when we heat our home, go to work, go shopping, or go on holiday ... every single, day-to-day activity is responsible for some carbon dioxide. It is unavoidable.
We may be able to reduce our usage using renewable energy and we may use public transport (but that itself still produces carbon dioxide) but, really, we would need to live and work in a cave to avoid producing carbon dioxide and there are just not enough caves to go around.
It is not possible to live without producing seriously large amounts of carbin dioxide and that is the challenge. We can do all we can to reasonably reduce what energy we use, buy more energy efficient appliances, not go on holiday by aeroplane but, sadly, at the end of it all we are still adding to the current problem. These leaflets discuss somne of the challenges in more depth.

Bees and Wasps
What to do in the event of a swarm
Swarming is the honeybees’ natural way of spreading. When the queen decides to swarm she leaves the hive followed by all the mature bees. The young bees left behind then raise a new queen to succeed her. Beekeepers recognise when a colony is planning to swarm and can take measures to prevent it, but some swarms do get away.
A swarm of bees is no threat unless it is interfered with. After flying a short way, they form a cluster round the queen, often on a low branch of a tree. Then scouts set off to find a suitable site and, when successful, return to summon the swarm to its new home. Thus a swarm settling in your garden may move on without you needing to do anything, although there is always the risk that their chosen home will be in the roof of your house or behind your shed.

Is this my hedge and ditch?
Hedge and ditch boundaries are an extensive and complicated subject because it can be dependent upon the content of any title deeds/conveyances/registered titles. There are two types of boundary in land ownership – a legal boundary and a physical boundary. The legal boundary separates one person’s land from another person’s yet will often not be identified with precision, either on the ground or in the deeds. The physical boundary is shown by a physical feature on the ground, such as a wall, a fence or a ditch, and may not always follow the same line as the legal boundary.
