Ps and Qs publishes monthly articles in Purton Magazine on four main themes: planning, green living, climate change, and nature. In addition, if there are good things happening in the village we add a footnote to our monthly article. Planning Alert! Green Tips Cool Communities Go Wild in Purton Good News Articles may be accessed directly at Purton Magazine's on-line archive Planning Alert! These Alerts! are used to inform readers about events and documents that may affect Purton. These may range from the long term Regional Spatial Strategy (that covers land use for the south west of England) to the local County-wide plans, Swindon plans and the local, North Wiltshire plan. The reason this is important is that decisions are taken many years in advance about the way that land may or may not be developed. Once something is adopted in a plan it is pretty much impossible to change that. Much of Ps and Qs work is to review the draft plans and to consider how they may affect Purton in the years to come. Occasionally, planning applications arise that need a response (perhaps a large housing development that eats into the rural buffer or a housing development that is inappropriate) and Ps and Qs works hard on developing thoughtful responses. Sometimes this involves giving evidence at public inquiry. Green Tips This is our main vehicle for raising awareness on all the ways in which we can steer our lifestyles to have less impact on the world's and our local resources. Topics that we have dealt with in the past include: renewable energy, fly-tipping & dog mess, recycling, garden chemicals, local shopping, green ideas for Christmas presents, food miles, hazardous waste, climate change, civil responsibility, transition towns and so on. This is our climate change awareness programme. We write about the basic science, what we need to do locally and globally, and focus on individual change whlst recognising that the "big picture" stills needs to be dealt with at government level. Go Wild in Purton This is the "nature" part our programme and has dealt with in the past: conservation around Purton, bird nesting boxes, big cats, wild flowers, enjoying winter birds, bees & wasps, trees, ponds, recycling in the garden and so on. Good News It is too easy to focus on the gloom and doom in life so we try to summarise the good things that have happened at the end of each monthly article. |
